Samuel Bassett: Rutting with the work experience kid

We are delighted to present the long awaited return of Samuel Bassett to London. Bassett had his first solo show with Nancy Victor six years ago in the old space on Charlotte St. The show hosts a collection of recent paintings, drawings and prints exploring split personalities and multiple personas.

Fragments from memory, snippets of conversation, daily occurrences and personal reflections play a vital role in the inspiration for the works. Through play Bassett juxtaposes collected figures, text and landscapes, thrown together to create a new open ended dialogue. The result is visually rich and engaging, underpinned with a dark sense of humour.

Vigorous and prolific in his output, Bassett states that: “Focusing on one painting in isolation would feel as though I was running on just one artery. Working over many pieces at once enables me to constantly adapt the work in an organic and unmeasured process as fresh thoughts, approaches or ideas develop.”

Born in St Ives (1982) Samuel Bassett went on to study at Falmouth College of Arts and The Arts Institute Bournemouth. He currently lives and works in Cornwall where he founded LETH Projects, a curatorial platform for emergent arts in Cornwall. Bassett is also a participant in the arts collective TAaP and a partner in BUCCA Gallery for emerging arts in Cornwall.

We are more than happy to present Samuel Bassett: Rutting with the work experience kid from Friday 8 March. After six years of helping to expand the Cornish art scene, Bassett returns to London with his second solo show at Nancy Victor. This exhibition comprises a collection of recent paintings, drawings and prints exploring split personalities and multiple personas. Join us for the opening night on Thursday 7 March, 6.30 - 8.30pm

A lecturer at Truro College, Bassett studied at Falmouth University, The Arts Institute Bournemouth and later founded LETH Projects, a curatorial platform for emergent arts in Cornwall. He has had several solo shows in London and Cornwall, is a participant in the arts collective TAP and a partner in BUCCA Gallery for emerging arts in Cornwall.

Found Memories - Wayne Chisnall

We are delighted to present Found Memories, a solo show by Wayne Chisnall. Being a sculptor, print maker, painter and illustrator allows Chisnall to vary and channel the outcomes when exploring and transforming recycled and found objects into eclectic collections, super curious, super imposing and empowering art works.

The works are made with materials that are steeped in memory and infused with familiarity. Inspired by his precise yet free-flowing sketches, Chisnall's darkly humorous sculptures frequently evolve out of a process-led dialogue between the subconscious and his chosen materials. Allowing the work to rebel and dictate, taking on its own presence. Whilst this process allows for unexpected jumps in the direction of the work, a strong 'organic meets geometric' aesthetic remains. 

Mythological sketches are transformed into compelling constructions and organic forms. Detailed instructions alongside these drawings are often left for months or even years before they coalesce into final objects or forms. 

The exhibition runs until Monday 4th March and we will be open late on Thursday 28th until 9pm for Fitzrovia Lates. Come join us for a drink and a chat with the artist. 

Collision - a group show exploring collage and assemblage

Current exhibition, Collision, is a group show exploring collage and mixed media based work. 22 artists were chosen from an open call for submissions and three artists Ellie Geary, Matt Gee and Angel Fernandez Sanchez de la Morena were invited to exhibit. The show aims to complement Tate Britain's Kurt Schwitter's exhibition, 'Schwitters in Britain', and support mixed media artists working in the 21st century. 

Exhibiting artists: Duncan McAfee, Ellie Geary, Angel Fernandez Sanchez de la Morena, Matt Gee, Cheryl Simmons, Christina Kerns, Christopher Eyles, Emanuela Santini, George Myers, JFM Masson, Ian Kirkpatrick, JV Aranda, Kadie Schmidt-Hackenberg, Kate Keara Pelen, Kraggy, Mo Awwad, Maria Christoforatou, Raksha Patel, Sarah Choo, Andrew Thomas, Janet Curley Cannon, Nicholas James Lockyer, Jon Pilkington, Henny Burnett and Will Nixon.

Collage allows us to investigate boundaries through varying mediums and ideas, exploring and combining new and existing formulas with ones not yet forgotten. The assemblage of recycled, found objects and varying materials fuse together to form outcomes that are forever interrupting our landscape, provoking ambiguity and diverting our way of seeing.

Upcoming Shows for 2013

We have a jam packed and exciting programme for 2013 with several solo and group shows and an exhibition of selected artists from an open submission. 

To start the new year we present Jordan Rodgers, currently shortlisted for The Aesthetica Art Prize 2013. New Babylon is a series of work presenting cross-disciplinary drawing involving architectural visualisation as part of research, images and thoughts in re-shaping the sense of a designed city.
From 9th - 18th January

'Collision' is an exhibition exploring the work of mixed media artists working in the 21st century. Through an open call for entries, 24 artists all working with collage and mixed media have been selected to take part in this two week exhibition. The selected artists draw themes upon the environment, landscape, culture, fiction, identity, history, space and much more.
From 23rd January - 4th February

We are delighted to be exhibiting a collection of works by Wayne Chisnall. This solo show will explore the reworking and assemblage of found objects, memory, organic forms, containment, possession and the functional aesthetics of nature, taking the viewer on a striking journey into the workings of the artists mind adding a pinch of magic and humour along the way.
