The Other Garden

The Other Garden, a group show inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' (image above) exhibited late April at Nancy Victor. Working across a range of disciplines and media, four artists explore themes of temptation and paradise lost, voyeurism and privacy, curiosity, obsession and gratification.

Since graduating from Central Saint Martin's in 2012, Anya Charikov-Mickleburgh, Laura Dekker, Liz Sergeant and Dina Varpahovsky have continued to develop their individual practices and also collaborate as members of the art collective XAP.

The Other Garden ran from 20–25 April 2015. 

52 Words A Year

Nancy Victor were extremely happy to present the exhibition,  52 Words A Year, an online project by three London-based illustrators, culminating in 156 drawings, illustrating 52 words from February 2014 to February 2015.

A year ago, Mayumi Mori, Leni Kauffman and Oliver O’Keeffe came together and created the project “52 Words a Year”. Every week a word was selected, and each illustrator interpreted it in their own way. The project has developed the creativity and flexibility of the artists and tested approach to their practice.

The strength of the drawings noticeably grows each week as the illustrators become more fluid and confident in their chosen visual language. Their styles are at once distinctive and experimental in approach, the confidence of the artists building as the project progresses, culminating in an eclectic but surprisingly cohesive array of images. This exhibition commemorates the completion of the 52 words.

Jon Delgado: 10 Years

London based artist Jon Delgado exhibited his first retrospective at Nancy Victor this March. Jon uses dyes and inks discharged with bleach to create luminescent work inspired by forest landscapes, childhood memories and antique photos.

10 Years featured a selection of paintings produced by the artist over the past decade alongside brand new work, including small-size sculptures playfully reimagining some of his subjects.

 The show provided an insight into Delgado’s particular sensibility and ability to manipulate single-colour pigments to achieve the desired intensity and hues, while also welcoming the unpredictable effects caused by applying bleach.

Impressions by Carol Wilhide

For two days only print maker Carol Wilhide exhibited Impressions. Everyday objects and views – from reflections in water to glimpses from windows – are explored in this solo exhibition, through the medium of linocut or woodcut, brief impressions of nature take on new layers of meaning. 

Carol Wilhide is a London-based artist who has exhibited her work in London, Paris and Tokyo. Her linocut 'Nest' was shown at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 2014. She is a member of the National Society of Painters, Sculptors and Printmakers and won the Matthew White Ridley Printmaking Prize at their show at the Menier Gallery, Southwark in 2013. Earlier this year she spent five weeks in Japan on a residency learning the mokuhanga technique.

Recent work by Yael David-Cohen

For this exhibition Yael presents a selection of recent work in three separate but related areas: fibre art and painting, artist's books and printmaking (etching and linocut). The works follow the theme of process of change in form and situation. Sometimes this is achieved in a series of works.

One of the connections between the works in the different media is recycling. For the fibre art Yael uses found fabric as a basis for painting and etching. Similarly, the artist's books comprise old carte de visite albums and photographs with added etching and occasionally fabric. Yael is showing representative pieces together from her practice because of their interrelatedness. The separate but related areas of work form an interesting combination to showcase reused and found objects inspired by natural processes of growth and change.

 

The exhibition runs from Wednesday 5 to Monday 10 November 2014. Open Monday to Friday 10am-6pm.

Head for the Horizon, I'll meet you there: A solo show by Alice Stallard

Alice Stallard  presented her solo exhibition 'Head for the Horizon, I'll meet you there' at Nancy Victor this October. The objects that people carry with them are investigated and interpreted by Alice in this solo exhibition. Loved and weathered, these often ordinary and everyday objects, carry great importance for their keepers and trigger memories of past adventures, hopes and dreams. Stallard delves into this notion weaving rich and colourful narratives around the objects, hinting at or exposing their talismanic presence. 

For this series of mixed media work, Stallard taps into popular and domestic culture with her use of printed ephemera, layered between hand-drawn images, paint and print. Traces of folds, etched and stitched marks are also found in the tactile surfaces reflecting the hidden or secret histories the objects portray. Colourful and composed, these cryptically titled pieces invite the viewer to look, stare and wonder. 

The exhibition ran from 28th October to 3rd November 2014.

Head for the horizon, i'll meet you there: a solo show by Alice Stallard

 The objects that people carry with them are investigated and interpreted by Alice Stallard in this solo exhibition. Loved and weathered, these often ordinary and everyday objects, carry great importance for their keepers and trigger memories of past adventures, hopes and dreams. Stallard delves into this notion weaving rich and colourful narratives around the objects, hinting at or exposing their talismanic presence.


Alice Stallard is a London-based artist who has exhibited her work both nationally and internationally. Her neon piece was recently shortlisted for the Winter Pride Art Award (London). She has had solo exhibitions at the Chelsea Arts Club (London) and been selected for group shows hosted by Print Club (London).

'Satirism - sat??? ?z(?)m' a solo show by Nick Smith

Presented by ArtDog London, 'Satirism - sat??? ?z(?)m' will be exhibited from Monday 13th - Saturday 18th October. Opening times 10am-6pm, Saturday 12-6pm

Nick Smith has an MA in product design.  He originally started his degree designing cars but wanting something with a wider scope moved to product design. He has a successful career as an interior design architect for hotels, bars, restaurants and ships. Working with Patone Colour samples in his day job ignited the idea of reductive art down to the basic elements while leaving intact the iconic recognisability. 

In Target Practice Nick has taken the soup can making a Warholian screen print and shooting it full of holes with a shot gun (which had to be done in Canada as he could not get permission to do it anywhere in the UK).   Hence, taking pot shots at Warhol in the form of what is most commonly used as practice fodder for gun enthusiasts, soup cans.

Flesh Leontia Gallery Pop up

Flesh was the first exhibition from London based pop up Leontia Gallery. 
Exhibiting  artists were Magnus Gjoen, Flora Borsi, Mariska Karto and Maria Koshenkova.

The artworks explored our experience of being a body and our complex relationship
with our own flesh, whilst also unlocking themes of alienation, fantasies, desire and destruction.

London Conversations: National Geographic Student Expeditions

The second group of students from National Geographic Student Expeditions will be exhibiting their photography for one night only tomorrow (Wednesday 30th July) in the gallery. Each student will be exhibiting two photography works which they have captured and processed during their two week trip to London.

Material Consequences, 10th - 15th September 2014

We are pleased to host Material Consequences, an exhibition by four designer-makers Stephanie Ray, Katherine Pogson, Karen Henriksen and Pinaki Editions.
Installed during The London Design Festival this is an opportunity to discover and buy new work direct from the designers, who met at Cockpit Arts, the creative hub located in nearby Bloomsbury. On offer will be textiles for interiors, surface design, wall art, conceptual jewellery, hats and fashion accessories. 
A narrative threads its way through this diverse collection of work - a reflection of the many techniques and processes involved in designing and making - of time and effect, material considerations and consequential discoveries.

Questions to ask when hiring a venue for an exhibition, pop up or event

When looking for a venue to host an exhibition, pop up shop or event choose a space that reflects your brand and ethos. Set a clear and realsitic budget for your exhibition or pop up and look around to see what locations and venues best suit. Prices vary depending on the location and size of the space. 
Before contacting a venue, ensure you know details such as dates (can be rough), length of hire and what you intend to show to give them an idea of your requirements and to get a quicker response.

Ask about the footfall of the area and what types of exhibitions or pop ups have been succesfull in the past. Weekends are generally retailers busiest times so ask how busy the area gets and decide on whether a weekend opening suits your event. 

When visiting venues, keep the following questions in mind:

Is the venue location easily accessible?
How and when can I book the venue?
What’s the capacity?
Do I need insurance?
Can I decorate the venue?
How long can I hire the venue for?
Is there a kitchen?
How do I cancel my booking?
