Upcoming show by Joanna Mires

From October 4th Joanna Mires will be exhibiting a recreation of a series of vintage Avon perfume bottles which depict a host of animals. Where once these bottles were attractive but essentially practical containers, they are now mere ornaments; far from reducing them to something crass, this elevates them to the level of fine art.

The result is a celebration of classic design that is comfortably mystifying, since until you know that these are slightly larger castings of Avon perfume bottles, all you see is a pristine petrified menagerie and that parade of animals unfolds like a curious dream. The secret to Joanna's work, however, is greater than the objects themselves: even when you have seen the works before, you are constantly delighted by their arrangement, since the objects come together to create site-specific installations.

Private View: Thursday 4th October
Show runs until Friday 19th October

Zeus's Pop Up Show

Last night Zeus's Pop Up Show 'amazed' the crowds with new works which explore urban compositions juxtaposing street art with architecture.

Amaze Part 1, 2012, 125cm x 122cm

Each sculpture encompasses light and shadow presenting a unique transposable outcome dependant on the positioning and light source. The experiment to present an unfixed shadow is essential to these architectural forms as they play upon the persona of a city and it’s transitioning of time.

The cardboard structures are all hand cut to create a simple yet realistic composition.

The open structural frames allow the light to playfully bounce between each line, depicting specific shadows  to create a second form.

Zeus's Pop Up show is open until Friday 28th September. Check out Nancy Victor for more details and news about up coming shows.

Live Printing by Mark Hayward

In conjunction with Fitzrovia Lates, last night Mark Hayward gave us an insight into how he approaches lino printing. It was a very fun and informal demonstration, resulting with members of the audience having the chance to print the final layer of an edition.
To complete 'Little Tank', there are 5 stages of print onto a fine handmade indian paper. Below is an example of three lino layers.

Sadly, today is the last day of Mark's exhibition but more info on up coming shows can be found on his website.

Paintings, Prints and Animations by Mark Hayward

Mark Hayward's solo show at Nancy Victor opened last week and exhibits a eclectic mix of original paintings, archival prints and two animations. Mark explores themes of identity and the individual using his faceless comic characters to construct fantasies that are at once, both strange and familiar.

Still's from Air-Raid 2009. Each frame was hand drawn on paper. Audio accompanies the piece.

Within this basic framework of the work there are themes that Mark returns to, feeling drawn to the military, childhood, national pride and uniform, all of which give a strong visual identity for the artist to play with.

Little Tank is a limited addition lino cut available at a very affordable price.

There will be a chance to talk to Mark about his work during a live printing session on Thursday 30th August from 6-9pm. This will be in conjunction with the Fitzrovia Lates initiative.
The show is on until Friday 31st August. Check out Nancy Victor for more details.

The Courgette Shop is Now Open!

The Courgette Shop started it's journey in April 2012 in the North Cornish town of Bude.
The accumulation of cardboard toilet rolls began with collection boxes amd notices being placed in schools, cafes, village shops and places of work in Bude and the surrounding villages.

Once enough cardboard toilet rolls had been collected and catalogued the painting process began. A handmade printing jig was assembled to create 5 painting stations. Each courgette started with a layer of green, then two thick dark green stripes, followed by 8 painted lines, then pencil lines in 3 different colours, and finally a series of yellow painted dots.

There are 100 hand assembled, screen printed boxes complete with handmade labels each containing 28 courgettes, weighing in at 425-445g.

It took 90 seconds to grow and harvest each of the 2800 courgettes culminating in a 3D print installation which sits somewhere between a fruit shop and a recycling centre.
The Exhibition runs until Friday 3rd August. Visit helenmurgatroyd.co.uk for more homemade printing jigs, fruit and veg!
